if the population continues to increase at the level that it has since the 1950s, there will be problems and problems on a massive scale.

    •  Getting this right will not be easy, for sure. (5+ / 0-)

Population growth has pretty much stopped in right countries (other than through immigration) and is slowing rapidly in most fast growth countries. This is why we should not slow economic development in poor nations even if it means some increase in energy use. Getting the balance right between slowing enegy use without stopping economic growth (and thereby halting population growth) completely is by far the greatest challenge facing humankind.

Global population is still growing exponentially and is still projected to reach 9 billion by 2050.

population growth is slowing in most fast economic growth countries not fast growth countries (which might be read as fast population growth countries). Yes total population may get to 9 billion, maybe even 10 billion but that is where many projections see it settling given current trends (projected forward).

Actually if we do not mitigate climate change one way or another that total will either never be reached or it will be reached only temporarily as food and water supplies fail in many locations, not necessarily locations very far away. I do not see that happening before the last decades of this century even if we do not act as effectively on climate change as we might.

    •  Population control can be done (0+ / 0-)

By pushing for full equality for girls and women, with education and reproductive freedoms by providing free birth control and abortions.

Take the control away from the men, and the girls and women will lower population growth quickly. It happens everywhere they get a choice, with education and access to what they need to do it.

Having children is painful dangerous business for girls and women. Giving them a choice leads to them choosing not to do it so much.
