when I was home in Kentucky. I held in my hands and read a diary kept by one of my ancestors who fought in the Civil War.
Found it in a collection at the University of Kentucky.

Kentucky was a border state, and we probably had relatives who fought on both sides. This one fought for the Confederacy. He was just a kid, 23 at the end of the war, and it sounds like he didn't do a lot of fighting. Spent 19 months in a Union prison and started his diary as he got out, amazed at breathing fresh air again in the last few months of the war.
They did a prisoner exchange in Virginia, and then he was all over that state in minor skirmishes.
He was close enough to Appomattox to hear the battle, but wasn't involved in it. Then likely among the first to hear from troops heading home that Lee had surrendered and the war was over.
He and his fellow soldiers didn't want to believe it at first, but finally did and ended up walking -- nearly starving to death -- over the Appalachian mountains to get home.
Not much about his political beliefs, just a personal story about one young man in a horrible war.

I think it's amazing that we can hold things like this in our hands, hold history in our hands.

Confession time: When I'm not ranting about politics, I write romance novels
