  •  Clever is no big thing for the SPLC (14+ / 0-)

SPLC first came to fame when they bankrupted United Klans of America with a $7 million wrongful death verdict. Morris Dees based his case on a then-novel application of agency law.

Dees argued that the klansmen who lynched a young man in Mobile, Michael Donald, were acting as agents of the UKA. A mistrial had been declared in the case of an African American youth accused of murdering a white police officer, and the UKA was angry about that. Dees presented evidence that a UKA leader delivered a specific exhortation on the night of the lynching to kill an African American as a form of retribution.

UKA was forced to turn over the deed to their Tuscaloosa headquarters building to Beulah Mae Donald, the victim's mother, to satisfy the judgment. The money paid for her to buy a home, where she lived until her death.
