    Ah yes.  The current system is ever so much better and easier to navigate than it was before the government deregulated and Reagan broke PATCO.

      when the government mandated certain routes.  The result is that many flights were nearly empty but the costs were still the same.  Therefore they had to charge much higher airfares which re-enforced the low ticket sales.

      PS  While the breaking of the air traffic controllers union is still debated with some passion, I don't think many people seriously argue that the regulations in place in the 1970's regarding mandated routes and pricing were very productive.  The main deregulation act actually happened in 1978 when Dems controlled the House, the Senate and Presidency.

      So if you want to argue that the Dems were wrong to pass the de-regulation and Reagan was wrong to further implement it, the floor is all yours but I think you would be in a small minority.  Doesn't mean that you would absolutely be wrong but those regulations ill served the public and the industry and it was right to get rid of them, IMO.
