the tragedy of the commons. Nothing will be done about global warming. Ever.

For if there is a sin against life, it consists perhaps not so much in despairing of life as in hoping for another life and in eluding the implacable grandeur of this life. - Albert Camus

    •  humans lived well with commons (0+ / 0-)

for many centuries stretching back down the ages.

it was specifically the global development of capitalism in the wake of the european trading system that brought us to where we are.

it boils down to that capitalism is eventually killing us (all) (and just maybe, theres a chance that the least developed, least capitalist folks pull through best).

Starvation was very common and agricultural output was poor. This was true throughout Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. Enclosure of land, where it occurred, resulted in a strong incentive for farmers to take care of their land and increase its output. In fact, lack of land title in Africa particularly has been a major factor in poor agricultural output. You only have to look at Zimbabwe to see the effects of land seizure on commodities. Zimbabwe used to export food; now malnutrition and poverty is the inheritance given to the people through land seizures. There is a long and abundant literature about the tragedy of the commons that belies this hazy romantic vision of a past that never in fact existed. What's everybody's business is nobody's business.
