    In a nut shell, peoples views (at least those living in the US) on climate change are highly malleable and very susceptible to potent imagery, which lessens the psychological distance that people experience toward the abstract concept of global warming.

    Per other comments, tales of conspiracy (Fox news framing of Climate gate) and other denialist narratives can also shift opinions back pretty fast.
