  •  Yes, the best way to do it (4+ / 0-)

when the food is flavorless and metallic is to load it with calories and concentrated protein and vitamins, so that just getting down a small portion will have a huge nutritious boost. It becomes a game of appetizing textures and colors, balanced with "what's easy to swallow/ignore"... I had a cousin (not a client) who had Stage 4 throat cancer about 3 years ago - he's fully cancer free now, btw, and for him I made a rich pureed Tuscan White been vegetable soup, flavored with bacon - it's good hot or chilled - so I loaded it with protein powder, vitamin supplements, and heavy cream, as well as pureeing it into drinkable form. He could take the container, pour himself a coffee mug, and either drink it straight from the fridge or microwave it. He loved it.

I'm not sayin' my soup fixed his cancer, but when he got the news he had beaten it back, I was one of the first calls he made.

    •  Sounds like a great recipe, Cinnamon. (0+ / 0-)

I'm suggesting it here in the thread rather than in a Kosmail to you so that other people see the idea, not to put you on the spot--but would you be interested in sharing the recipe? DrLori is collecting go-to recipes for people in chemo or other conditions that create fragile appetites; she wrote a Monday Night Cancer Club diary about it a few weeks ago.
If you are, feel free to send her a Kosmail, or just add it here to the thread. If not, I understand.

I'm seeking to organize DKos members in SE Michigan--roughly, from the Ohio line at Lake Erie NE to Port Huron, W to Flint and back S from there. If you'd like to join our new group, Motor City Kossacks (working title), please Kosmail me.
