Below is an e-mail I sent to my congressman today:
    Dear Congressman Neal:
I appreciate the hard work you do in Congress and realize you support the President on his position regarding fiscal matters.   My note is one of
reinforcement for the middle class position in this debate.
I know you have the best interests of the middle class in mind as we confront the fiscal crisis (or faux-crisis.)  In terms of bargaining with Republicans, they need to hear that the middle class and poor have already given everything they can give.  Please tell the Republicans and any wavering Democrats that the people have spoken.  Our demands are challenging yet, simple: Raise revenue without touching Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security.  This is why we pay congressional salaries, benefits and pensions.  The job of Congress is to figure this stuff out.  If the rich are asked to contribute more to keep the government solvent, so be it.
The impression we in the middle class have is one of the rich sitting in a beach chair sipping a tropical drink for the last ten years while the rest of us take cover as everything we signed up for (jobs, 401ks, reasonable housing values, etc.) collapse around us.  Please challenge Republicans to explain how a 4-cents on the dollar increase is going to force economic ruin on the wealthiest percentage of Americans. Warren Buffet made the excellent point that no one will reject an opportunity to make money just because they may pay a slightly higher tax on their returns.
Please fight the fight for the middle class. As you know, we all win when the middle class wins.
    Thank you.
