      I was referring to fact that no one complains that the Interstate system doesn't turn a profit, while they expect Amtrak to.

      I agree that we're paying heavily now for the destruction of our formerly great rail system.

        we're talking about the same thing.

        That interstate highway system doesn't exactly pay for itself, after all.

        (Although, in all fairness, we've never really had "public railways" in this country anyway.  Amtrak is the successor to several overlapping/competing private railways that provided increasingly negligent public transportation, operating on lines generously provided for by public subsidies, graft, corruption, and the theft of Native American lands and the genocide and forced relocation of Native Americans.  But it was at least public transportation.)
