  •  Had a discussion the other day with my well (11+ / 0-)

educated lawyer boss.  It's all about the sex with them - they can't get past it.  And the basic reason for marriage is to have children, according to him.  I told him I was offended.  That he was totally disregarding loving long term relationships that have nothing to do with kids and family.  I also asked if he thought we should be basing our civil rights on his, and people like him, "morals" without even considering that not everyone shares those "morals."  Morals, my ass.  The fact that "those people" think they can instill their beliefs on us by way of laws is just stunning and stupefying to me.  How dare them.

    •  I don't get this, either (4+ / 0-)

To me it seems totally disrespectful of marriage to reduce it to a mere baby factory.  It disrepects people (gay or straight) who can't/won't make babies,  and also stepparents and stepkids, adoptive parents and their kids, etc.

I'll believe the people who take that position when they actually advocate policies and laws that make marriage about procreation. How does your "educated lawyer boss" think marriage creates children? Unmarried hets have no problem reproducing.

Maybe marriage should be mandatory - as soon as you reproduce biologically with another person you and that other person are legally married. Might this be a proposal your "educated lawyer boss" could approve of?

You might ask him how preventing a same sex couple from marrying helps the children they're raising.

Your "educated lawyer boss" does not actually believe what he says he believes, he's just grasping for a handy excuse to justify hurting people.

      •  And to take another tack, (5+ / 0-)

should society prohibit marriage for those unable to procreate? Should those who've lost their ability due to disability or illness, or women past menopause, be told "No marriage for you"?Should we annul marriages that don't produce offspring within, say, 5 years?

So true, all of it.  That was what I found so offensive in his remarks.  No one else's opinion or relationship mattered other than that which he thought mattered.  How Republican of him.  It's offensive.  His attitude, and the GOP's in general, is offensive.  I asked him about civil rights and his answer went back to marriage should only be between a man and a woman and the reason is procreation.  You can't get past the self-assured, self-absorbing ignorance to a place of reason, ever.  It's their way or the highway.   I read about people from certain states wanting to secede, and I think to myself "go, and take this incredible unreasonable ignorance with you - please."
