        but I like to believe it because it supports my compassionate worldview.  And because I do believe people can change.  

        The truth is, he did have a pretty awful disease, he was dropped like a hot potato by everyone who had courted him in his heyday, and it's possible that he felt that karmic consequences (or in his case, 'divine retribution') were/was at work.

        Wallace recanted his views after his shooting; extreme change is indeed possible.
