  •  Historical perspective. Good & bad (again). (3+ / 0-)

2012: Incumbent Dem wins despite high unemployment.

2008: Dems win despite candidate who was black (remember, this was a big deal) and had a funny-threatening African-Arab name (remember, this was a big deal, too).

2004: GOP barely manages to eke out win despite general advantages of incumbency AND rally-round-the-Prez effects of 2 ongoing wars.

    2000: Dems win popular vote.

1996: Dems win by large margin.

1992: Dems win despite GOP incumbency.

That's 5 of the last 6 for the Dems, popular-vote-wise, and damn near 6-for-6.

Still, we should not get cocky. The main thing about African-American people and Latino people and Asian people and LGBTQ people is that they are...people. And people will always be susceptible to the siren call of something-for-nothing: "You can have everything you want from government AND pay less taxes, and if it doesn't work out then it must be the fault of [insert scapegoat outsider du jour]."

When African-Americans and Latinos and LGBTQs and immigrants and pot smokers are no longer outsider enough to serve as scapegoats, a new scapegoat will be found. And the same old siren song of something-for-nothing will be sung by a somewhat different choir. But it will still be the same old song. And it will be again be LOUD.

"The true strength of our nation comes not from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals." - Barack Obama
