      the mississippi river gulf outlet canal has more to do with lost delta wetlands than global warming.  Use to be you stood on the levee in St. Bernards and you could see cypress swamp for miles, now you see the open gulf.

      the canal was built to give shipping s straight shot to the port of Orleans, what it did was provide a chute for sediment to pass out of the Mississippi and much further out into the gulf.  The sediments forming the swamps eroded away as there was no further redeposits.  Add in some vegetation kill from oil activity (and oystermen/shripmers) and suddenly the delta is shrinking.
      Close the shipping canal and it will take an extra 12 hours to get into the port but the impact of hurricanes will be much reduced.
