    I haven't really clarified my own thinking on this whole issue yet, but someone who's opinion I really respect thinks that the biggest "winners" here were the moderate Republicans...which I  agree is an interesting point.

      The same argument was made when the moderates initially stopped Reagan.

      I heard Reid praise John Warner.  So, there was definitely something to be said for the moderate Republicans.  Who knows.  The tabloids have been awash lately with stories on McCain.  Maybe he will finally step out in front now and begin to face down the White House and the House Republicans.

        He wants to make the GOP moderates realize that their power exists in resistance, not in subservience to Bush and Rove.

        He's probably treated them a lot more respectfully than, say Bush and Tom DeLay have.  (None of the GOP Senators liked being told by Bush that they were supposed to vote on the horrifically unpopular Use Terri Schiavo As DeLay's Human Shield Bill -- which is why only the bare minimum of them did so.)
