    The "end of the world" is calculated by counting the number of days since the beginning of the long count, which was August 11, 3114 BC.  The end of the count happens 1,872,000 days later, which, according to our calendar, is December 21, 2012.  

    In other words, they didn't specify a date, just a number of days.  The actual date is determined by the calendar used by the person who's interested.  In our case, it's December 21.  If our calendar didn't account for leap years, the date would be sometime later.
