  •  I read your diary and went out to look (7+ / 0-)

By 6:20 AM the picture had changed with Jupiter a diameter and a half below and to the north of the moon which was due west from me. The morning was cold and very clear with just a hint of snow frosting the grass.

I went and got my wife from her perch to come and have a look with me.

I call it her bag lady perch. Its where she goes to sit on a red plastic milk crate sheltered from the wind by a well rusted 86 Toyota pickup that still runs but has no brakes and is up on blocks with a couple of flat tires.

She told me she had noticed how bright the moon was as she was getting up but hadn't realized that Luna's consort this morning was Jupiter.

Sitting there on her perch hunkered down low to the ground in the morning she looks at the stars and watches the coyotes coming out to mark their turf, then skulk back into the woods just thinking about stuff while she has a first cigarette before going to work.

She is quitting. After 44 years of smoking a pack a day and putting away a case of rolling rock a week suddenly she has quit drinking beer cold turkey and taken up electronic cigarettes. She also is doing a lot of baking trying to gain back the weight she is losing.

We are getting older and some of the changes are a little scary but with Obama reelected, affordable healthcare coming soon, signs of recovery everywhere it almost feels like spring even though we aren't even into December yet.
