  •  As I understand it, there is no blanket ban (9+ / 0-)

    on use of federal funds for the study of gun use statistics - only that, IIRC, the CDC (and NIH?) is banned from doing such.

      They cannot, however, use federal funds to actively promote any legislative agenda.

      So, they can do the research, for its own sake, but they cannot then try to influence a legislative body with the results of that research, one way or the other.

      At least, that's how I understood it.

      This is a pretty anti-gun article at the NYTimes, and it states:

      The Senate later restored the money but designated it for research on traumatic brain injury. Language was also inserted into the centers’ appropriations bill that remains in place today: “None of the funds made available for injury prevention and control at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention may be used to advocate or promote gun control.”

      I have seen this same information given in a more "official" place, but can't seem to find it at this point.
