  •  We Democrats need to unite and rally around the (0+ / 0-)

idea that any reductions to government spending that are part of a "grand bargain" should come from trimming the dramatic increases to the military budget since 9/11, and not come from social spending, the GOP likes to call "entitlement" spending."

Increases to social spending has not been the primary cause of our current imbalance. President Clinton's economy had a surplus which President Bush promptly destroyed with enormous unfunded increases to to military spending and tax reductions.

Republicans including Karl Rove, and all the way back to Ronald Reagan and his advisor Lee Atewater have published the strategy to do this to strangle out social spending.  Democrats will appear to be weak and stupid if we are duped into going along with this strategy.

Plus, we will unnecessarily fracture our hard won, and rebuilt Democratic unity if our leaders betray Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid recipients with the Simpson-Bowles cuts such as the chained CPI, raising Medicare eligibility age, etc. that many Democrats, including our President have indicated willingness to discuss in the past.

After this election we are in different circumstances and must publicly renounce such approaches and instead put military spending on the table if the Republicans want such cuts.

But, care must be given that we do not do this too quickly during a time of economic weakness setting off an austerity bomb.  Perhaps, infrastructure spending, and increases to state Medicare to implement the ACA can provide some temporary transitional stimulus?
