  •  This is exactly how you negotiate. (25+ / 0-)

This is what we've been calling for around here for years.

You don't negotiate with yourself in a backroom. You negotiate with the public from the stump.

    •  I think we need to give the president some credit (11+ / 0-)

because he's reaping the benefits of the debt ceiling deal he negotiated, and we all hated, two years ago.

The GOP didn't completely back themselves into this corner. A gentle nudge from Barack Hussein Obama helped them get there.

      •  Thank you. (3+ / 0-)

After the ripping Obama has taken on these pages it is good to see someone declaring he be given the credit those policies have begot.  Obama is, in my opinion, a brilliant pol.

      •  Oh no. No 11 dimensions again. (4+ / 0-)

These aren't the "benefits." This is the change in posture. It was his previous negotiating position that led him to the healthcare negotiation debacle which led him to losing the house which led him to reapproving the bush tax cuts which led him to having to negotiate over the debt cieling in the first place.

The president didn't start winning the negotations until after the debt ceiling debacle when he himself said he needed a new approach. I've written about this too many times to repeat it.

Lets not go back to this whole "its all part of a brilliant cunning plan" stuff plase. Can I just enjoy good political strategy when it happens?

to recognize in 2011 that the Bush tax cuts expire at the end of 2012 and that if the GOP doesn't play ball before that deadline then they'll be facing an unavoidable precipice.

The president made a decision after the debt ceiling debacle that he would run for reelection on raising taxes.  You'd be a fool to think he wasn't hoping to get to the exact position he is in right now.

          •  he was trying to avoid defaulting on our debt... (0+ / 0-)

two books have been written providing insight into where the WH thinks they played their hand incorrectly....

I give credit to the President for dumping Bill Daley, who got him into that mess...and I am glad to see Republicans reinforcing their recalcitrance before the President nominates his next CoS...

About the change in negotiating strategy, but let's not kid ourselves - it is indeed a change, and a huge one.

Thanks for all your hard work on this!

        •  There are literally books written (0+ / 0-)

on the fiasco that were those negotiations...and people believe this was a plan?

I am just glad they decided there was an alternate way to do things...it started with the photo op at the bridge...and moved to jobs plans, and now we are reaping the rewards of using the people and bully pulpit instead of Rahm's preferred backroom methods...

imagine if the public option was negotiated this way...

      Winner, Winner, chicken dinner.
This is a war of ideas. They have nothing new and are not creative enough to come up with anything. This is the war of ideas. When you find yourself in a war you fight to win. You keep hammering the other side until they quit. You do not under any circumstances allow them to regroup, reassess, Once you have the initiative you keep it. No time outs, no mercy rules, keep rolling and wrecking anything they put in your way.
We have the by their old saggy nuts and now is the time to squeeze as hard as possible. If you're going to fight, fight to win. Let them wail. It is what losers do.

affect society. President Obama learned from his mistakes regarding that and has improve his governing style. The debt ceiling deal and Bill Daley removing smog regulation were the turning point.

We need to MAKE the Democrats stay strong and to their People's values.

"bully pulpit" thing isn't that "magic wand" thing we were told it is?
