    -- I was in a non-insured predicament about 2 years ago in Houston TX.

    Here, 2 of our public hospitals (LBJ and Ben Taub) have a Medicare-related assistance program. Through Harris County you apply for a 'Gold Card' (an ID card/program) that determines your income/assets-- and what level of assistance you can receive from either hospital.

    When I was unemployed/uninsured, I was in a bracket that paid 80% of charges/fees. Once employed, still uninsured, 100% of charges/fees. Regardless-- those charges/fees were still greatly reduced from 'retail rates'.

    You would pay a co-pay (usually of $100-to-$150) at time of services, and be billed for the remainder.

    Don't know if the program is widespread or not. I was made aware of it by being referred to the emergency room at LBJ by a GP at an urgent care clinic.

    But it did save my life.
