  •  Let's face it..neither side is moving until Jan (8+ / 0-)

If they vote today, Republicans vote for a tax HIKE.  If they wait until January after the Bush Tax Cuts expire, they can then vote for a tax CUT.  They have no incentive to do this before January.

Democrats?  They get to make Republicans look bad, and they get to get rid of the Bush Tax cuts and replace them with the Obama Tax Cuts.  Not a ton of incentive there either.

So it's going to happen, and hopefully a bill with hit the floor of the house around Jan 15 to fix everything.

    •  Don't bet on a fix after January. (0+ / 0-)

Morning Joke just said this morning that if a deal is not reached this year, then so what?  His position is that the Senate will pass middle class tax cuts.  Then the House will pass tax cuts for everyone, including the top 2%.  Then what?  They could care less about the middle class rates going up.  They feel if the rich have to pay more, then everybody should pay more.

Deficit hawks my ass!  They have proven time and time again that given the choice between reducing the debt/deficit and tax cuts for the rich, they always opt for the tax cuts.

      •  In theory, sure (0+ / 0-)

in practice, when people are calling their reps wanting their tax cut and screw the 2%, we'll see what happens.

Of course, it doesn't matter.  If we want to be honest, the entire tax cut needs to go away...we really need to raise revenue, and that burden can go on everyone's shoulders.  The middle class were doing fine with taxes in 1999.  We can go back to that too -- especially if we raise the freaking 15% bullshit on cap gains.
