  •  I should add that it is worth noting that ... (12+ / 0-)

Nixon, who was busily turning his party over to the racist Dixiecrats, still had a much more liberal domestic policy than that advocated by the current crop of Republicans.  In fact, if it were not for his Southern Strategy, Watergate, and his handling of the Vietnam War, he might have been remembered as a good president (to be fair, Johnson and even Kennedy have to take a lot of blame for the war!)

The main point is that the mess that is now the Republican Party is a sad reflection of its former self.

    •  When we took over (4+ / 0-)

from France in Viet Nam Ike was asked why there were American troops in the country he replied "Tin, tungsten manganese and rubber." He gets to share in the blame.

      •  True, Ike made the mistake of ... (0+ / 0-)

listening to the wrong people.  But you can even go back to Truman on this.  Roosevelt was the last one to see the danger of supporting France after the war.

In essence there were a lot of fingerprints on Vietnam, but the most were from LBJ and Nixon.

      •  He was a War bureaucrat... a brilliant one (0+ / 0-)

which was what was needed to win the war in Western Europe and it was also what allowed him to understand the monster that the US had created in the Industrial military complex and to warn against what it would become...

But he still had that technocrat and strategic raw materials focus and with the Cold War mentality he probably did just see the realpolitik first and not fully understand the imbalance in the approach and the continued creation of new problems with this mindset.
