  •  What do you mean what Bowles says now is (3+ / 0-)

irrelevant? He has millions at his disposal to push his and his backer's agenda and he is opening chapters across the country; lining up powerful supporters in each state like Jim Hunt in NC.

Federal Spending Target of 21 Percent of GDP Not Appropriate Benchmark for Deficit-Reduction Efforts from our Democratic centrists http://www.cbpp.org/...

The whole argument's foundation, which even Warren Buffet alluded to is that too many including Bowles have a battub concept about Federal spending-- treating spending as if it's a piranha. Limiting spending to a percentage of GNP is straight out of a Grover Norquist's playbook and too many accept the meme.

Happily for now, President Obama's budget and memo of last week to Boehner avoids much of Bowles Simpson.

But, let's not be naive, those millions can purchase a lot of shall we say PR goodies like this, "Oh Bowles and Simpson are making the hard choices  for the American people, because the people are not capable of doing so."

    •  naive? did millions purchase the WH for Romney? (0+ / 0-)

feh. Too much is made of these millions.

But people don't point to Fix the Debt and say "I am a Very Serious Person™"., They do that by pointing to S-B. That's what I mean about not mattering.

And the Wall Streeters are and have been lined up on the MSN; they have a welcome platform to push their agenda, while we working stiffs only have out elected congresscritters, so we'll disagree about money's influence, feh. :)

        •  it matters a lot locally (0+ / 0-)

not so much nationally. Rs are not winning on taxes for the 2%.

That's where the money interests are and they are losing that fight.

and as you lede says, thanks for the walk down memory lane.
Sen. Patty's Murray: Murray spent long hours behind closed doors with House and Senate Republicans and emerged convinced the GOP was offering only damaging proposals to cut health, education and environmental programs without agreeing to ask the wealthy to pay more in taxes. http://www.washingtonpost.com/...

And as I referred to in a post above, I believe the basis of the old commission's debate was wrong-headed from the start underpinned by a Republican concept of limited government.
Good diary, and I wholeheartedly agree with your post that  the path forward should be a patient one.
