If Obama truly had that much foresight and political acumen, he would not have arranged to lose control of the House and thirty or so state governments to right-wing crazoids.

Here's my theory: Obama screwed up badly in the first two-thirds of his first term, but not bad enough to cost him a second term in an election against an incompetent Republican national party.

I agree: Time will tell, and he's off to a good start in his second chance.

To paraphrase Kurt Vonnegut: Pure joy is waking up one morning to realize that your high school class will NOT be running the country for the next four years.

Obama is one of the most legislatively successful Presidents of the modern era.  The notion that he "screwed up badly" is completely inaccurate.

I think that what Obama was doing is simple: he was trying to attract Republicans at the margins to squeeze as much stimulus as he could out of Washington.  I don't agree that Obama was trying to lull people into thinking he was dumb as was claimed in the comment you replied to.  The opposition was already so racist that he didn't need to do any additional work to make them believe that.  I think that his strategy was to win Republicans at the margins for any stimulus he could get, and to make Republicans run from their own ideas.

      It worked.

He was re-elected in an Electoral College landslide.

Obama was trying to lull people into thinking he was dumb.
Lulling them into thinking he was relatively innocuous is a different strategy. I think Michelle hit the nail on the head when she said, in the 2008 campaign, that he was a tough veteran of Chicago politics. I think Obama prefers to reach consensus but is willing to be an effective street fighter if forced to do so.

The world is not interested in the storms you encountered, but did you bring in the ship.
