  •  I agree that the optics of this are (0+ / 0-)

incredibly bone-headed (and insincere), the committee itself is very powerful within the House. I served as a House page from September 1992-January 1993 and my sponsor was Charlie Rose (a Democrat from North Carolina's 7th district). At the time he was chairman of the House Administration Committee so I was able to see first hand how much influence that the committee has over the running of the House. And, from my experience working in the House, the term "house-keeping" was used fairly frequently to describe a variety of tasks and never seemed to be used in a demeaning or sexist way.

What exactly is the influence?  Was Boehner clueless enough to appoint her to what sounded like a relatively minor (even insignificant) position, only to give her more power than intended?  Are we laughing about the outside of the sandwich and missing the complexity and "meat" of the matter?

      •  The biggest impact that the committee has... (0+ / 0-)

outside of internal House operations is on Federal elections. Any election issues involving possible corruption/fraud, voting machine tampering, contested election results, campaign finance disclosures, etc. falls under the purview of this committee. That role alone makes this committee a pretty big deal, IMO, given all of the Republican shenanigans in the past several elections.

Is the committee a somewhat glorified HR department? Yes, in some respects. But even some seemingly unimportant (to us) things are a big deal to House members, such as what office space they get and how much staff budget they are allotted. So the committee is important to internal House operations.

Sorry I didn't see this comment soon enough to rec it -- I'm starting a new job and have a lot of documentation to wade through.

          •  I'll bring this point up again (0+ / 0-)

if I see another diary written about this. I think people got bogged down by the name of the committee and one of its roles. Its other role regarding federal elections is a much bigger deal.
