  •  6 separate jobs. (3+ / 0-)

1 fulltime [department store offices], 1 halftime [day care center], during the week. 4 large houses that I cleaned on weekends, each of which took me 3-4 hours apiece.

I grew up in Hawaii, and needed to earn $$$ to buy clothes for college in frosty New England. I needed long sleeved shirts, pants & sweaters, not to mention a winter jacket, coat & boots. That stuff doesn't come included in an academic scholarship! Of course, Hawaiians would always dig through the backs of their closets and give you whatever they had. I went off to school with a few funky retro wool sweaters!

I had no problem with working. I was quite proud of it, actually.

be less than my dreams?  Ignorant hillbilly question, yet, I wonder, do many, like myself, think Hawaii is paradise?

Speechless, except, you are far more remarkable in your accomplishments, and triumph over burdens, than silly people, like myself, could have imagined.

The cost of living is very high, which is why I can't afford to live there right now. But it was the best place in the world to grow up. I carry the islands and our special culture in my heart every day.
