when I questioned whether his lack of experience was a bigger deal than I had realized. I was a huge Obama supporter during the primaries, but during his first few years as president I sometimes wondered if maybe he would have been better off having more experience first.

In some ways, he would have had an easier time if he had stayed in the Senate longer, long enough to develop meaningful relationships with senators in both parties that he might be able to leverage in negotiations. But on the other hand, if he had waited 8 years he would not have been able to bring to the office the fresh perspective and idealism that made him unique.

I think he definitely made some rookie mistakes, as all new presidents do, but as you said, he managed to achieve an impressive amount in spite of it.

I am proud to see him now playing hardball and starting negotiations from a position of strength. But it is disappointing that he has to play the game this way. Early in his presidency, he started out listening to both sides and then offering a proposal he thought both sides could accept. It is unfortunate that rather than appreciating the opportunity to have a say in shaping the president's proposals, Republicans used his attempts to build consensus to push the middle point in negotiations further to the right.

to learn to expect Republicans to act like Republicans.

but then came to realize the moment was ripe. Sadly, the moment rotted, due to the economic crisis, before he was able to get to the WH and get started on what he wanted to accomplish. So, to mix metaphors, he had to spend his entire first term putting out raging forest fires.

Imagine how different an Obama presidency would have been if it had come during a time of prosperity. I think we'll get to see a few glimpses of that in his second term, but nothing like what would have been possible.
