    They know.

Or else they avert their eyes, close their ears, and harden their hearts.

We are living in a time in which medications can hold the level of virus way down, and I remember a time when people were deathly afraid of herpes, too, but now we have tv advertisements suggesting medications to keep your viral load immeasurable for that too. So many infected people are not wasting away before the young people's very eyes. Plenty are, but plenty are not- witness Magic Johnson.

During the last days of the 2012 election, it became clear that even readers of dkos younger than about 40-years old were not familiar with the metaphor or the reality that created the cartoon elephant/twisted-wire-coat-hanger.

Cultural images have changed and so much time has passed that today's young people simply weren't there to see the carnage. Here's a book to introduce people to that: My Own Country, by Abraham Verghese.

And a much earlier classic: And the Band Played On.

just a statement of fact -- people under a certain age never knew or don't remember those bleak days. I've been reading the local gay press since the late 1980s (my spouse is a newspaper fiend and will read anything put in front of him, so we often picked up the free weeklies like BAR and Bay Times when we'd hit SF on a weekend), and so remember the pages, the stories, and hearing of the endless parade of funerals even though I'm a straight middle-class chick.
