football these days.   Our culture is slowly releasing it's clinging bearhug to gender roles regarding sports.  It's actually very socially acceptable for a woman to be a serious football fan today.  Some haven't chosen to because of this attitude:

she knew-nothing-and-could-not-care-less about the violent game of football
That's unwillingess to give it a chance based on being sure of what it is without having taken the time to find out.

I have a son who is 7 and a daughter who is 6.  I am originally from Ohio.  If you aren't a football fan in that state you'd best pretend to be one.  So, my children asked me about football (my daughter actually asked first) early in this season.  I was watching my beloved Ohio State Buckeyes at the time, but I told the kids that it would be best if I showed them the basics using a Playstation video game and then we could go to the park and bring the football to try some stuff in real life.

My wife has never been much into football either.  She had no interest in finding out about what she was sure she didn't like too.  (The same woman will chastise our kids if they turn their nose up at food that they've not ever tasted.)  She was, however, interested in seeing me attempt to use a video game as a teaching tool.  So, she watched.  It turns out that she'd never had such an understanding of all of the different positions and strategies for making use of the players as a team.  Once she understood the hows and whys of the game, she discovered that she actually really LOVES the game.

She calls it the best spectator event in the world now.  When I have to work on Saturdays, she DVRs that game and can't wait to watch with me!  She knows things now, like a defense that is too aggressive in the persuit of the quarterback is vulnerable to a screen pass or a draw play.  She gets why you never lob the ball short over the middle.  She sees how reading a blitz will result in a chance to find an open reciever every time if your mind and eyes are fast enough.

    FSM I love that woman!

Picture a bright blue ball just spinnin' spinnin' free. It's dizzy with possibility.
