    since it prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages.  It does not make them illegal.

    I think the distinction is immaterial in many cases though; consider a friend of mine who is married to his foreign husband. Because the marriage is not federally recognized, it does not provide a path to citizenship for the husband.

    Imagine if the federal government chose not to "recognize" Latino births.  You can still have one, but the child won't get citizenship.  Then what? (aside from the fact that the constitution clearly answers that particular question).
