  •  Yes, exponential growth is a symptom if "positive" (11+ / 0-)

feedback loops, which in control theory math means "reinforcing" not "good."

A few could be catastrophic such as the melting of methane buried in the Siberian tundra and under artic  oceans and a second being the oceans ability to absorb CO2 is inversely proportional to temperature.

So, one dangerous possible scenario that has to come to our mind when we see data like this coming in faster and higher than our current computer simulations predict is that if your atmospheric temperature rises, causing massive amount of methane release from the oceans and tundra, and starts to cause the oceans to disgorge CO2 at an accelerated rate, the temperature of the atmosphere may rise even faster pushing this "positive" feedback loop out of control.

There may be no way to stop it, and it could quickly become an extinction level event so fast we might not have sufficient time to create alternative self-sufficient biospheres to save some number of future generations and avoid extinction.

As soon as any coordinated planning for such a scenario get underway, the 6.5 billion people, and their children not included in this "life-pods" are going to get upset.  We think the 1% tensions are ugly now, it will be nothing compared to the .0001% tensions if we are talking about survival for ourselves and our children.

However, the earlier we plan and the more "resiliency" we can start building into local communities and living habits now the better off more people can be during the extreme weather and biosphere related consequences.

Gak!  Now we can see why folks would rather drink beers and watch football.  At least, until the next storm.
