  •  These tests are all but worthless (6+ / 0-)

These standardized tests, and I mean especially the multiple choice tests like the annual California Standard Tests we give every year, are all but worthless.

It was a mistake to allow these tests to dominate public education.  It will be very difficult and it will take time, but we need to end the testing regime.

The problem is that the forces that rule our world absolutely love these tests and they are constantly promoting them as valid and useful measures of student learning.

The public supports the testing regime because no other methods of measuring student learning have been presented.  When we teachers say that the tests don't tell us what we really want to know, the public just hears teachers complaining and trying to avoid accountability.

      So what's the alternative?

other than the opinion of the teacher a student happens to have?

Throughout my life I have had good teachers and bad teachers. I have had caring teachers and vindictive teachers who held a grudge against rude or insensitive children and who enjoyed punished said children by failing.

Tests have there place. An argument may be made to improve tests.  However I find the SAT to be a pretty good test, in that it allows you to know where your weak areas are.

What is wrong with concentrating on your weak areas?

        •  CSTs don't provide that information (0+ / 0-)

And I would argue that the SAT doesn't do that either.

There is are several differences between doing well on the SAT and being an educated person.

There is much more I could say about this, but I note that the thread is stale and you probably won't even read this.

But here is just one fact for you:  California students have no stake at all in their scores on CST tests.  They have no impact on grades or promotion.  The students take the test in May and the results are sent to the school in August, just before the next year starts.

The superintendent wants to hold teachers accountable for students scores on tests that mean nothing to the students.

These forces include the corporate testing companies, corporate "education" companies who want to take over our public schools and the funding that goes with them, and anti-union forces.

All of this high-stakes (for the schools!) testing exists so that people can beat up on public schools and teachers, and eventually replace them with corporate-owned schools.

      Follow the money!
