  •  That's one part of it (4+ / 0-)

but we can't wave off all responsibility on the inevitable chaos of large groups.  Choices were made that should not have been, and choices were not made that should have been.

    •  On a more fundamental level, (8+ / 0-)

it seems that you implicitly support a centralized hierarchical model of social and political organization.

Hierarchical, centralized political and social models have their benefits and it's flaws. Decentralized political and social models also have their benefits and flaws.

An authoritarian one-size-fits-all model of politics, while effective for 19th and 20th century politics, often over-simplifies an increasingly complex social and economic zeitgeist.

In the end, why should Occupy scale up into a centralized, hierarchical 19th century style political organization where a handful of charismatic personalities and careerists hold sway? Don't we have enough of those already?

... to get stuff done. A decentralized organization is a means to an end. Lots of people in Occupy saw the decentralized organization as an end in and of itself.

Maybe centralized political organizations with leaders and clear goals exist because they are more effective than the alternative.

They're against having no say in anything, and being forced to work more for something less than a minimum living.  This is what I'm talking about.  Being decentralized is not what made Occupy strong - its message and passion were. The non-hierarchical stuff was just an anarchist fetish nobody else gave a shit about, and they let that take everything over.
