Note who the most fearful people are: usually old people. People with time on their hands and end up using much of it watching TV, often because of health problems.

I recently had a discussion with my retired father that was rather enlightening.
I told him how the news media was causing people to be more fearful than necessary, and that crime rates had been dropping since the early 90's.
His response was that I was being foolish because "all you have to do is watch the news" and see how violent everything had become.

Then I made a mistake of actually producing facts: I tried to show him a chart of crime rates in America.
Not only did he refuse to look at it, he started mocking me.
The discussion did not end well.

This is a man who I have respected my whole life. But when it came to questioning what he saw on TV and questioning the reasoning for the fear in our country our relationship had a break down.

goes into detail about the public relations/psychologist/corporate/government alliance, now 90 years strong. And not at all hidden. President Hoover praised Bernays, the founder of public relations, for turning Americans into consuming "happiness machines." And what a world of woe that's opened up!

It amazes me how many people even at DKos don't grasp the pervasive, and malevolent, effects of mass-reach Media; nor do they see how this is the lynch-pin for things as we have them.

There was a productive stream of TV research in the late '70s which showed that moving images bypass the brain's critical faculties: after all, seeing is believing. So, like your Dad, people believe their own eyes. Even when what they see is literally channeled by someone else.
