  •  This is not about scorching the earth. Even when (0+ / 0-)

Obama got one over them he was still labeled the caver. he got one over them plenty during the past four years including this tax situation and the so call fiscal cliff, accepting the deal is a cave and should be pointed out. Obama has governed equitably the last fours with an un-yielding Republican party from the get go. He does not have to prove anything to the American public on this point.

but not your conclusion.  I agree the Republicans have humiliated the President (or think they have) and have used scorched earth tactics themselves.

But that is not the way Obama has governed and as the commenter above states, you get farther with allowing your opponent to save face.  Of course, it wouldn't hurt to remind them that you saved their ass... this time.

I would not be surprised if the negotiating points for this deal come down to the threshold for higher rates.  I'm betting it will be $500,000 instead of $250,000.

    •  Might not be the perfect term (0+ / 0-)

Perhaps a better phrase can be chosen. But the idea is, is the goal to score a policy win or is the goal vengeance?  The Venn diagram overlap is often quite small and vengeance is often much more expensive.
