  •  Some of the automatic cuts might be the only way (0+ / 0-)

to address the gorilla in the room, the almost sacrosanct Department of Defense budget.

We have left the shore far behind on reasonable defense spending. I personally am for a strong defense, but entirely too much of that budged has not a damn thing to do with "support the troops" or "strong defense." An awful lot is pork, pure pork. Some is scandalous; consider "Drone crashes mount at civilian airports" where we find:

An inexperienced military contractor in shorts and a T-shirt, flying by remote control from a trailer at Seychelles International Airport, committed blunder after blunder in six minutes on April 4.

He sent the unarmed MQ-9 Reaper drone off without permission from the control tower. A minute later, he yanked the wrong lever at his console, killing the engine without realizing why.

As he tried to make an emergency landing, he forgot to put down the wheels. The $8.9 million aircraft belly-flopped on the runway, bounced and plunged into the tropical waters at the airport’s edge, according to a previously undisclosed Air Force accident investigation report.

The story goes on to note that the contractor, Merlin RAMCo of Jacksonville, Florida, took over the Seychelles operation and the two operational drones quickly became "hobbled by problems."

There is far, far too much of this sort of thing along with needless and poorly directed programs in that budget, yet mention serious review and slicing of waste and fat and you get "support the troops!" cries. Yeah, the very same "troops" that too often did not get what they actually needed as contractors protected by political influence got into the 2%.

The only foes that threaten America are the enemies at home, and those are ignorance, superstition, and incompetence. [Elbert Hubbard]
