    prostate surgery (this was about 25 years ago) and ran into problems -- he had only my elderly mother to help him. He didn't have to be readmitted, but it was a close call. And lots of people do end up being readmitted. Hospitals were paid based on an average length of stay -- so if they could discharge patients short of that average, they benefited financially. A readmission was just fine with them because it starts a whole new length of stay based on a different condition (e.g., wound infection). Kicking you out too soon, and elderly patients like my father was all based on bottom line thinking, not patient-centered care.
