  •  I know what you mean. We have a big ... (8+ / 0-)

street lamp in the front and a neighbor in back with lights frequently left on at night.

Good luck with the neighborhood workshop. Perhaps a diary on it for us to read?

    •  I bet many of the people who have lots of lights (10+ / 0-)

are also repub anti-tax types - they're overlit because they buy into the fear that is being sold to them on Fox.  If you framed your "pitch" as  "the extra cost of all that light is like a tax you're imposing on yourself", then maybe they'd see the light.  Imagine if the city or county wanted to tax them an extra $50 a year to pay for additional lighting in the neighborhood - they'd be out there with pitchforks.  But they'll pay 4 times that much because they've never thought about the cost (and not do as good a job).

Many people in our population voted republican in the last election.  Many of those people are anti-tax.  Many watch Fox and get their fear-filled programming daily.

What I was trying to do was think of a framing that might appeal to someone who isn't motivated by the environmental cost, and to a certain extent, not even by the $$ cost.

Right now, a lot of people hate their utilities - motivate them by saying that all the money you're paying for unused light just goes for bonuses to the same idiots who deferred maintenance and cut crews so much that it takes days to get your power back after a storm.

          Whatever works.

I doubt that right wing extremists care about excessive bonuses to CEO's of utility companies (if anything - they would cheer the top management).  I do not believe they make the connections you and I make - logic and consequences.  Perhaps pointing that out is helpful.  Appealing to their selfishness, on second thought, might work.

I've made "talking to rednecks" one of my main exercises in charity for thirty years.  They hate utility execs as much as any good libr'al.  Same with bankers.  They haven't got any more use for fat cats than anybody else; they've just bought a lot of hogwash propaganda foisted on them by people who knew just what to say and how to say it.
