Paying to "rent" a DVR is more painful to me than any power bill to run them. If you aren't a sports or TV news junkie then cut the cable/satellite bill and go with a Roku (or similar) box and pay for Netflix and Hulu. Hulu gives you current shows and Netflix takes care of the older stuff. Another possibility is one-off purchases from services such as iTunes, Amazon and Vudu. Yes, you will need reasonably fast internet to go this route. You also need reasonably fast internet to maintain a modern computer operating system.

Contrary to what some may believe, most modern chargers (cell phone, laptop, etc.) do not draw power when they are connected only to the wall. What does draw power are the solid state electronics in audio/visual gear. It's the instant-on feature that draws the power. I had a stereo setup that I almost never listened to. It was only after unplugging it that I realized how rarely I used the equipment. The ultimate solution is the power strip that can act as a master switch.
