  •  China has the same problem that we do (0+ / 0-)

We have not developed a believable strategy and the technology to build a sustainable civilization. The one that we have now requires a great deal of fossil fuel to support the life styles of a developed country. China is approaching the same CO2 emissions per capita as the EU, 1.8 tC vs. 2.0 tC in the EU. China is becoming a developed country, especially the half of the population that lives in urban areas. We cannot wag our fingers at them until we develop the strategy and technology to build at least a low carbon economy. They have been leaders in sustainable energy with PVs and Wind Turbines and in low energy high speed transportation with HSR.  Sustainability is a much bigger and more difficult problem than putting a man on the moon. And it has a much more urgent imperative. When will we respond? Until we take the problem seriously we cannot fault China for building a developed economy just like ours.

And by the way the technology does exist to cut our use of fossil fuel by more than half, it's called efficiency. As long as we feel that we have the right to put a 170 lb person in a 4500 lb SUV to commute to work we are not to be taken seriously.
