happened when Mom began dropping DB, DS and me off at the library while she got her hair done and went shopping.  We were snug as bugs on many rainy afternoons with unlimited access to stacks and stacks of books.

We weren't allowed to watch "Happy Days," but at age 10-12 we were checking out Stephen King, Kurt Vonnegut and Sylvia Plath titles with abandon.  My mom was so busy reading Hal Lindsey's latest Rapture prophecies, she paid no attention to what we were reading as long as the TV stayed off, and occasional piano was practiced.

Being literate was the one thing that saved my ass when I got to college.  My social skills were zilch, I felt like a deer in the headlights all the time, and my roommate hated me.  But dammit, I was a fast reader and cogent writer, and that was enough to keep me afloat academically until I figured the rest of it out.

Not sure I'd call it lucky, but I'm determined to make lemonade ;)

I can think of no more stirring symbol of man's humanity to man than a fire engine.     -- Kurt Vonnegut
