Firearms ownership is up, concealed carry is pretty much the law of the land, and yet gun violence has been falling for years and continues to fall. Japan, where guns are effectively banned, has the highest suicide rate in the world.

Guns are obviously the sole problem, and prohibition the only answer...

but minimize away...wait I think Whitlock has something to say to you.
I would argue that your rationalizations speak to how numb we are in this society to gun violence and murder. We’ve come to accept our insanity. We’d prefer to avoid seriously reflecting upon the absurdity of the prevailing notion that the second amendment somehow enhances our liberty rather than threatens it.

enough to think that - contrary to the reality of decades of liberalizing gun laws simultaneously coupled with plummeting homicide rates, that domestic violence and homicide - the most personal, up-close, emotional form of violence, would be in the least bit impacted if a particularly impersonal means of performing it were removed from the equation; or that suicide, whose rates here are dwarfed by those in gun-free Asian countries, have anything to do with the methods available.

I do know that criminologists have studied the rates of defensive gun usage and put the number (depending on methodology used) somewhere in the hundreds of thousands per year to millions per year - and that this fact is callously ignored or dismissed by those purporting to lament the tragedy of violence in our society and take action on it by making the potential victims more vulnerable by disarming them.

    •  The Japan-suicide anecdote may not be useful (4+ / 0-)

to the pro-gunslinger set, given decades if not centuries of negative stereotyping about Japanese culture in regards to suicide.

And the anecdote is perpetuating it.
