    are what I rate my managers on.

    1.  Shielding us from corporate BS
    2.  Fighting for us. (which is related to #2

    Hm, actually there are 3

    3.  They get us meaningful work (which usually means also projects important to the company and thus visible to upper management, which gets us recognition.  And helps with #1 and #2)

    You can usually tell the really good ones at our company.  They keep inheriting other organizations as they move up in job title, usually "problem" groups that somehow become efficient and productive.   And their org usually never, ever, loses anyone to anything but RIFF-inflicted damage or voluntary retirement.

      A good leader will enable their people to get access to career building projects and assignments, while the manager will always ask "what's the profit margin if this person works on that task?"

      Those who do not understand history are condemned to repeat it... in summer school.
