    that requires refrigeration is the ham (and resulting stew, if made in sufficient quantities). Eggs last awhile at room temperature, especially if left in the carton. None of it requires freezing.

    We were on food stamps for more than a year, getting (max) $314 for two. We did have a freezer and a fridge, and we struggled at times to keep the electricity turned on. However, we stocked up as much as we could on foods that did not need freezing, but I did cook double quantities of cheap meals and froze the extra for future dinners or lunches.

    We also were in a good spot as far as grocery stores, and so we shopped sales and loss leaders with coupons as much as possible.
