If they actually stand there and filibuster a la Mr. Smith Goes to Washington or the West Wing "The Stackhouse Filibuster" episode. Forget this cloture nonsense and go back to an actual filibuster.

Sometimes there can be legitimate reasons for one person to hold up passage of legislation. In those cases, that person should be front and center, explaining his reasons. I wish some lone soul had done that when they passed the USA PATRIOT act (actually, I wish scores of souls had stepped up on that one).

The only positive examples of the filibuster its defenders can cite are fictional.  The filibuster works great in movies and TV shows!  Let's ignore the 100 years it was used to defend lynching, segregation and voter suppression.

Ol Strom Thurmond had no problems standing there for hours in a diaper railing against civil rights legislation.  Think Tom Coburn or Jim Inhofe feel any shame at talking for a long time to hold up things?

actually show the weaknesses of the fictional filibuster, anyway. If the leading Senator can take a break for questions, there are built-in periods of rest.

I believe the difference on TV was the president was not opposed to re-opening the bill. Can you imagine how the Rs will scheme to keep from passing a new stimulus or increased tax rates bill?

That said, really looking forward to seeing Lyndsey Graham, John McCain and Mitch McConnell in diapers!!
