at least if you figure that President Obama's biggest hammer in the negotiations is the middle-class tax hikes.

By caving on the top 2% tax hikes and extending the middle-class hikes, Republicans take this hammer off the table, salvage at least some of their dignity, and get a bit stronger in negotiating position.

That's because the LAST thing they want to do is use the debt ceiling to take the middle-class tax hikes hostage..... that is just too ugly even for Boehner.

So, as Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) points out, they're going to lose on the top 2% tax hikes, so why not get them off the table for as little pain as possible?

It wouldn't surprise me if this deal was accompanied by a 'put it off one year' deal on the sequester, both for defense and non-defense spending - I don't think the Republicans really want to go to the mattresses on that one either.

Toss in the Medicare doc fix and AMT deferral - which NOBODY wants to screw with - and that's most of the 'fiscal cliff' stuff.

That leaves the basic hostage-taking equation from last year: debt ceiling increase vs. some package of spending cuts (that led to the sequester last time).

This is so incredibly WRONG that I keep sitting back and shaking my head.

There's a BIG difference between negotiating and compromising on major issues of policy..... and grabbing anything and everything to hold hostage to the threat of blowing up the entire world's economy.

    That's terrorism, plain and simple.

These people (well, most of them... I'll leave the tea-baggers out of it) know better.

The bill must include other things like removing the debt ceiling.

That the GOP are taking America hostage should be shouted from the rooftops.

The Thugs got away with this the last time, though as it turned out they gained very little, and they taught the president a valuable lesson: These people cannot be trusted.
He's been revved up ever since.

The debt ceiling won't work so long as the president and the Democrats take a simple position:
We will not negotiate with hostage takers or with economic terrorists.
The president can simply explain to the People that there is no alternative, and that if the Republican Tea Partiers force his hand, he'll simply do what Bill Clinton advised the last time, that he use his authority under the Constitution rather than allow a world economic crisis.
