    By incorporating the previous experience of the dozens of times we've done this in the past?  By referencing all of the times we've landed similar rovers on the moon?

    Suspicion is warranted because nobody is actually on mars and nobody has a way to be absolutely, 100% positively certain that the instruments are clean.  There are too few (potentially no) prior data points and experience with this.
