  •  Fear is "neutral" (1+ / 0-)

as the neurotransmitters can be released for any of a large number of reasons -- rational or not. It is neutral in that you can't determine the reasonableness of the fear by simply measuring the levels of neurotransmitters.

People ruled by fear, for example, normally exhibit anti-social tendencies. Those reacting to a real and imminent danger are simply acting for self preservation. Reading their neurotransmitter levels will not in any way answer the question of whether the fear was justified or not.

that understanding of what fear is does not apply.

I think that it is important in this discussion to understand that much of the fear motivating us to be armed on the streets is political fear ginned up by the gun industry through the IRA. And that if this political fear, which I consider irrational, is released, we can have a much more rational discussion on the role of guns in our society.

          meanings of "fear" interchangeably.

Adrenal-rush fear is not the same thing as prudent preparation "fear".

Furthermore, you presume that a reduction in the cause for the latter should cause gun owners to want to give up their guns; but never admit the corollary - that the same conditions should cause those wishing to ban or regulate guns to also reduce their efforts.

nonadrenal fear is the "Black Helicopters are Circling My Shower Drain" thing.

"Caution" would be to not live in a coastal flood zone, and perhaps to choose the tornadoes of the upper mid-worst, over the hurricanes of the south and east.

Prudent Preparation "Fear" is to evacuate when told to do so, and to construct a house designed to approved hurricane/flood standards and hope for the best.  Or, if you've chosen plan B above, to head to the tornado shelter instead of clinging to your gun, bible, and mobile home.

Non-adrenal fear is: "Gays and Mexicans are causing Hurricanes - and Tornadoes".

at the sight of a spider.  I'm a real wuss about spiders.  Not fond of centipedes either.  I guess that all points to multi-legism.  I hope that's not as bad as racism.
