is a minority view among gun owners, most of whom are not rabid militia members (or even NRA members). The chief purveyor of this fear seems to be the NRA, who use it to drum up donations.

The hysteria surrounding guns being taken away from us, leaving us defenseless against the horde, is stoked by the NRA (nee gun industry). It bleeds to all levels of our society, and validates the minority of gun owners, including white supremacists and militia types, who espouse this view. It leads to stupid laws like concealed carry in churches and schools, and to also validating the stereotype of the violent young man of color.

If this frame is demolished, then perhaps this argument can be reduced much more to truly responsible gun owners.
