Survival School used to do for Helicopter trainee's at Clark AFB Reserve, in the Philippines, during the 'Conflict' in Vietnam.
Even though it was a US held Base, the PI Government and the American Military had not managed to remove all of the anti-government insurgents from such a huge, 244 square miles, reserve.
Every survival kit came with a 45 cal M1911A1 Pistol, but for this course, they removed the Pistol because they wanted us to hide from the insurgents and felt the Pistol would change our mindset from defensive to offensive.
If the Military felt that way in the late 60's and early 70's, why hasn't the civilian population come to terms with the fact that having a handgun escalates violence and does not quell it.

    •  Because defensive gun use (10+ / 0-)

      outnumbers firearm injuries and deaths.

    •  tsk. Kenny on South Park is the sensible one. (8+ / 0-)

JSS was to counter the idea that your aircrew personal firearm would somehow permit you to shoot your way out of North Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, or VC-controled areas of Vietnam.
      Your .38 nor your .45 ain't-enough gun.  Plan B is called-for.

With that as fact, your conflation that JSS Escape/Evasion is preferable per the US Military, is blatant bullshit.
It's what you do when Plan A, fails.
You remember Plan A don't you?
"Take the fight to them."  Valid for all paygrades E-1 and above.

Personally?  I'm in-favor of using a firearm as a last resort.
Knife to face, now or never, and no way out of here except past my attacker.  Otherwise?  I'd rather avoid the arrest, media circus, and vast expense associated with shooting someone.  Conviction or acquittal.

      One other thing:
If those Moros caught up with you?  Plan B may not have worked, as you were viewed as-friendly towards Marcos.
Much the same for being a door-gunner, or scorching a countryside with napalm.

The locals weren't friendly, and your pacifist nature may not have won their hearts and minds.  Pacifists don't make for prettier corpses.

      •  I don't know what you are rambling about and who (0+ / 0-)

you are calling a pacifist. Nor do I see what you base your statement that it was my conflation to disarm us for our final JSS OJT.
The idea was not to be caught. Regarding the Moro's, 8 rounds would never be enough.
I don't know where you get off insulting me or calling me a liar.
        Where I roll that's unacceptable.

I was running riverine through to 1968 around Luzon.  Never heard of such a thing.

      •  That must mean it's not true (0+ / 0-)

To set the record straight, we were never warned about Moros on Luzon and I only posted what was my experience.
I can't make it more real than that.
Marcos was in charge, curfew was Midnight, Magsaysay Street in Olangopo was dirt and Shit River stank.
Other than that, the Rambos here know better.

made stupid decisions based on politics, amIright?

That was a really dumb decision then, and it's a rather stupid philosophy now.  It's not even supported by any credible statistics.

For the record, I just finished my 22nd year in the USAF.  Two more to go....
